Thoroughbred Money Leaders

When Curlin won rare back-to-back American Horse of the Year titles for 2007 and 2008, he had become the all-time leading money winner in North American Thoroughbred horse racing. In 2007, his wins included the Breeders’ Cup World Championships Classic in America, and in 2008 he went to Dubai to win the World Cup. Those two races are the world’s biggest money-earners in the Thoroughbred circuit.

Here are the Top Five money earners from that time, along with their records and winnings:
No.1 = Curlin; earnings = $10,501,800; record = 16 starts (races), 11 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 thirds; last raced in 2008
No.2 = Cigar; $9,999,815; 33-19-4-5; 1996
No.3 = Skip Away; $9,616,360; 38-18-10-6; 1998
No.4 = Fantastic Light; $8,486,957; 25-12-5-3; 2001
